Gabon: Shell recently announced a frontier exploration discovery offshore

November 17, 2014

Shell recently announced a frontier exploration discovery offshore Gabon, West Africa in an area covered by Spectrum Multi-Client seismic data.

The well Leopard-1 encountered a substantial gas column with around 200 metres net gas pay in a pre-salt reservoir. Leopard-1 is located around 145 kilometres off the Gabonese coast, west of Gamba. It was drilled in water 2,110 metres deep to a total vertical depth of 5,063 metres. Shell and partners are planning to undertake an appraisal programme to further determine the resource volumes. This discovery comes just a year after the Diaman-1 well was drilled by Total in 1,754m of water in the southern salt basin offshore Gabon, discovering hydrocarbons in the pre-salt section. Spectrum holds a significant library of Multi-Client data offshore Africa including over 20,000 km of 2D seismic data offshore Gabon. This data gives both a regional overview and also highlights key areas such as the vicinity of Leopard-1. In cooperation with ARKeX, Spectrum also offers Gravity gradiometry data and basin modelling information relating to southern offshore areas.
