Acciona adds 138MW in South Africa

September 16, 2015

A consortium led by Acciona Energía has started commercial operations at the 138MW Gouda wind farm in South Africa.

The project is located in the municipality of Drakenstein in the Western Cape about 100km north-west of Cape Town. It consists of 46 AW100/3000 3MW turbines mounted on 100-meter-high concrete towers. As well as Acciona Energía, which owns a 51% stake in the project, the other partners are South African infrastructure firm Aveng (29%), Soul City Broad-Based Empowerment Company and community development entity Local Community Trust, both with a 10% stake.

The Gouda wind farm was approved by the Department of Energy in the second round of the Renewable Energy Independent Power Producer Procurement Program (REIPPPP).

Acciona plans to bid in the next rounds of the REIPPPP and said its subsidiary Acciona Windpower is negotiating the supply of turbines to some of the firms awarded wind power capacity in the country.
